Alone in the Dark Returns With Original Story From SOMA Writer

Another classic horror series will see the makeover treatment as publisher THQ Nordic announced there’s an Alone in the Dark remake on the way. After years of critically-panned installments, the publisher revealed its Alone in the Dark remake returns to its roots with a visit to New Orleans and nostalgic references.

THQ Nordic lists a few big horror standouts among its creatives for the reboot. SOMA and Amnesia: The Dark Descent writer Mikael Hedberg has penned this latest story, while Guy Davis — a Guillermo del Toro collaborator on projects like Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water — provides monster designs.

Developer Pieces Interactive returns to Derceto Manor in a reimagined, modernized, but familiar iteration. It’s the same manor from the original 1992 Alone in the Dark — just “expanded and transformed.” Set in 1920s New Orleans, the studio says its new vision takes place in the gothic American south, “a noir setting with classic Lovecraftian horror elements.”

Alone in the Dark reboot announced for PS5, PC, and Xbox.

Original ’90s protagonists Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby are also playable, while the game’s enemies are new creations with a few nods to creatures of the past. In the reboot, you’ll explore Decerto after Emily’s uncle goes missing. She teams up with investigator Carnby to explore Decerto, “a home for the mentally ill where something is lurking.” The Pieces Interactive reboot doesn’t require familiarity with other games in the series, but THQ did note Alone in the Dark fans will see more characters, places, and themes from the original.

Other nostalgic elements, like the series’ roots in psychological horror, survival, and twisting puzzles, continue as pillars in the reboot. THQ Nordic picked up the rights to Alone in the Dark from Atari back in 2018, along with Kingdoms of Amalur and Timesplitters. As for the when, Alone in the Dark has no release date yet, but it’s coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

As for the genre-at-large, Alone in the Dark’s era rivals like Resident Evil and Silent Hill keep the remake and rumor cycle up. Capcom finally confirmed its Resident Evil 4 remake is on the way, while Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 saw next-gen updates back in June. And while there’s still no confirmation about the state of the series, people still can’t stop whispering about a Silent Hill rumor that puts Bloober Team at the helm.
