Doctor Strange 2 Is Journey Of Self-Discovery, Says Benedict Cumberbatch

Star Benedict Cumberbatch opens up about how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a journey of self-discovery for the titular hero.

Star Benedict Cumberbatch opens up about how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a journey of self-discovery for the titular hero. Sam Raimi is at the helm for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking the reins from Scott Derrickson following his departure due to creative differences, with a script from Loki creator Michael Waldron. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continues the story put forth in Spider-Man: No Way Home, WandaVision and Loki season 1 and centers on Strange as he grapples with the consequences of breaking the doors of the multiverse open and requiring help from new and old allies to travel through various realities to fight a mysterious adversary.

Cumberbatch returns to lead the cast of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the titular role alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Benedict Wong as Sorcerer Supreme Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer. The film will also mark the MCU debut of Xochitl Gomez as young heroine America Chavez and Patrick Stewart seemingly as a version of X-Men leader Professor Charles Xavier. As time draws nearer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to finally hit theaters, those behind the film are offering new insight for what’s to come from the MCU sequel.

While speaking with Empire for the cover story on the film, Benedict Cumberbatch opened up about his character arc in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The star described the sequel as a journey of self-discovery for Strange, noting the hero is “almost a stranger to himself” at the start of the movie. See what Cumberbatch shared below:

“There’s a lot of reckoning. And a lot of self-discovery. Strange is almost a stranger to himself before this film unfolds and reveals what, essentially, is in his nature, that he then has to either confront or resist or fall into or become. There are some very bold ideas, and some extraordinary tests of Strange and encounters. There are some very unexpected conclusions.”

Cumberbatch’s tease that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a journey of self-discovery for his hero may sound like any other superhero film, but there’s a few interesting layers to this idea. Though he has described the sequel as a far more collaborative effort than his other MCU projects, Cumberbatch has recently expressed concerns that the film is “very busy” and that the story didn’t leave him with much of a character arc amidst the “bonkers” events its title would suggest. However, Cumberbatch’s newest discussion that he’s on a journey of self-discovery in the film does point towards the recent reshoots and post-production work possibly helping hone in Strange’ story in comparison to what he had encountered before.

The star’s note that the titular hero will have to confront “his nature” within Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also serves as an interesting bit of insight for what the story holds for his character. Previous trailers and merchandise for the film have confirmed multiple Strange variants will appear, with everything from the villainous Strange Supreme to the seemingly heroic Defender Strange, with all representing various ends of the spectrum the sorcerer could fall on if he’s not careful in his actions. Only time will tell what “unexpected conclusions” are to come from this journey of self-discovery when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.
