Encanto Taking Over Disney’s It’s A Small World Ride

Encanto Taking Over Disney's It's A Small World Ride

Disney’s Academy Award winning film, Encanto, will be taking over the “it’s a small world” ride for a limited time at several Disney parks.

Disney announced that its Academy Award-winning film, Encanto, will be taking over Disney’s “it’s a small world” ride for a limited time. Encanto follows the Madrigal family, who live in the magical realm of Encanto, which was created by the candle of matriarch, Alma, as she and her family flee their home village in Colombia from armed attackers. Several musical numbers, including the chart-topping “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” are performed throughout the film and the Madrigal family’s journey.

“it’s a small world” originally debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair with the ticket sales donated to UNICEF. The popular attraction was then shipped to Disneyland park, where it opened on May 28, 1966. “it’s a small world” is still operating in several Disney parks and features over 300 audio-animatronic dolls in costumes from different cultures around the world. The song, which plays during the 10-minute water ride, is inspired by the concept of international unity and global peace.

According to Disney, “it’s a small world” will become enchanted by the characters from Encanto beginning on April 11, for a limited time. Several times a night, “it’s a small world” will showcase a brief visual montage that celebrates Encanto’s hit song, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” Lighting effects that mirror the song’s lyrics and musical style will help feature several projected characters. In addition, tiles across the façade will flip, turn, and rearrange themselves during transitions from scene to scene and feature Bruno’s prophecy about Mirabel.

Having a contemporary update to the “it’s a small world” ride, including a brief break from the ear-worm inducing song that traditionally plays throughout the entire ride, will give children and parents visiting the park in April a fun surprise. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is nevertheless quite a catchy tune, topping the charts at No. 1 and being the first Disney song to do so since “A Whole New World” in 1992. The song’s adaptability, from it’s modified version featuring Megan Thee Stallion at the Oscars, to the original version’s ability to be listened to as a stand alone song on the radio, is one reason why the choice to use it in the “it’s a small world” ride should breathe some modernity into the attraction.

Similar to the adaptability of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “it’s a small world” was refurbished in 2008, and has seen several additions of more modern Disney characters to it over the years. However, the iconic art design from Mary Blair and Alice Davis in its multi-cultural tapestry, including the many animatronic figures which dot the ride, is still instantly recognizable. How the ride will feature Encanto’s unique art design and style while enmeshing it into the classic façade will have to be seen this April by visitors to Disney parks around the world where “it’s a small world” is still operating.
