Of all the playable races in Skyrim, Argonians may be the most underrated, although players would do well to give them a chance. As one of the two playable beastlike races in the game, the Argonians’ reptilian features are quite striking. However, they have their own set of benefits that make an Argonian a very strong candidate for the Dragonborn.
Argonians hail from the swamplands of Black Marsh, which cannot be explored in Skyrim. However, in the region of Skyrim, Argonians are frequently the target of racially-based discrimination. The most prominent example of this appears in Windhelm, where the Argonians live by the docks and are unable to enter the main part of the city. It is an unfortunate reminder of the unsteady racial tensions within Skyrim society. However, in other parts of the region, Argonians are able to find much better places, such as Madesi the jeweler in Riften. And of course, it’s possible for the Dragonborn themselves to be an Argonian.

There are several perks to playing an Argonian in Skyrim, some of which are frequently overlooked. While every race has their own strengths, Argonians have some unique quirks that deserve a second look. An Argonian Dragonborn could be a very strong choice for the savior of Skyrim thanks to their unique abilities.
Argonians In Skyrim Can Be Excellent Thieves
In Skyrim, every race will receive bonuses to certain skills by default. For example, Nords have an advantage with two-handed weapons while Bosmer have a talent with Archery. They will also receive smaller bonuses to a handful of other skills, usually guiding the player towards a specific build. For example, High Elves are geared towards becoming excellent mages, even though Skyrim’s spells were somewhat lackluster. As for Argonians, their set of skill bonuses give them a good head start towards becoming thieves.
Argonians get their highest bonus towards Lockpicking, with Pickpocket and Sneak also getting bonuses. This will let Argonian players earn more perks in these abilities early on, making them great at procuring extra items and gold. Interestingly, Argonians do not gain any natural advantage in any combat abilities, only earning 5 bonus points in Light Armor, with all of their other strengths having nothing to do with combat. While this can be a minor disadvantage at lower levels, the player will likely earn combat experience quickly, so it’s not as big of a weakness as one may think.

Players who want to make a stealthy thief build in Skyrim may want to give playing an Argonian a chance. While they may not be a great fighter from the start, their natural stealth and quick hands will work wonders. Although Khajit may be Skyrim’s most famous thieves, an Argonian certainly shouldn’t be counted out.
Argonians Are Very Resilient In Skyrim
Every potential race for the dragonborn in Skyrim has extra abilities in addition to their skill bonuses. Some of these can be very useful, such as an Orc’s ability to go into a rage, increasing their damage output while toughening their defenses. In the case of Argonians, all of their unique racial abilities are very useful.
Argonians are the only race that can naturally breathe water without the assistance of a spell or enchantment, adding extra convenience while exploring. They also have the ability to increase their health regeneration tenfold once per day, proving that Argonians are some of Skyrim’s best characters, with strengths outside of thievery. Their hardiness also comes through in their final ability, as Argonians are 50% more resistant to diseases than any other race in the game. With all of these abilities combined, Argonians prove to be quite durable and attuned to the elements thanks to their survival skills.
It should be noted that in Survival Mode, Argonians are the only race to have a new weakness, as their cold blood makes them vulnerable to cold. However, aside from that, Argonians’ racial abilities are all well-balanced and generally useful. Their effects may be simple, but waterbreathing, fast healing and disease resistance are all powerful abilities that will come in handy time and time again over the course of Skyrim’s story. While every Skyrim race has advantages, it’s hard to argue that the perks for being Argonian aren’t near-constantly useful.
Argonians Are Severely Underrepresented Across Skyrim
As previously mentioned, there are not many prominent Argonian NPCs that the player can meet in Skyrim, at least not connected to the main story. It’s likely that the player’s most significant Argonian encounters will be the dockworkers in Riften, and the thieves Jaree-Ra and Deeja in the “Lights Out!” quest. For the most part, most of the player’s important interactions will be with humans and elves. Because of this, an Argonian Dragonborn makes for a unique character.

In both the Empire and the Stormcloaks, there are no major Argonian characters involved, leaving them out of one of the game’s biggest plotlines. Likewise, despite being reptiles, they are also largely absent from the running storyline of the dragons returning to Skyrim unless the Dragonborn themselves happens to be Argonian, and since Skyrim’s Dragonborn doesn’t have to be a Nord, that could very well be the case. The lack of prominence given to Argonians even comes through in other game mechanics. Derkeethus is the game’s only Argonian follower, and outside of him, there are only two other Argonian marriage candidates. Compared to the large number of human and elf options for both roles, the lack of variety is surprising.
Fans of Argonians will not take long to realize that if they want an important Argonian character in Skyrim, they will have to take on the role themselves. With a general lack of other important characters of their race in the storyline, the Dragonborn would be the most important Argonian in the plot by a wide margin. If a player is considering playing an Argonian and is fond of the species, this fact could be the deciding factor. While not immune to the effects of the worst choices in Skyrim, an Argonian Dragonborn is just as capable of handling them as any other.
Argonians are not Skyrim’s most popular race, but the player has definite reason to play as one. Between their natural advantages and just plain interesting design, they are just as valuable a selection for the player as any other. In Skyrim, and Argonian Dragonborn could be an ideal protagonist.
