Between Bungie and Activision-Blizzard acquisitions, Sony and Microsoft are buying up studios left and right. Consolidation seems to be a go-to strategy for console creators right now, so everyone’s a little one edge as we wait to see what PlayStation or Xbox might be swallowing whole this year. All that being said, Hideo Kojima, the director behind Death’s Stranding and the Metal Gear series, seemed to be hinting his studio, Kojima Productions was about to become part of PlayStation’s first-party developers alongside other newcomers like Haven Studios…then promptly said the incredibly misleading photoshop wasn’t indicative of any such acquisition.
It all started just after midnight eastern time, when Kojima tweeted out an image of a PlayStation Studios graphic including characters from games like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II, Guerilla’s Horizon Forbidden West, and Santa Monica Studio’s God of War. But those were normal things you’d expect on any such graphic. What stood out was that Sam Porter Bridges from Death Stranding was also on the far left of the image. Death Stranding originally launched on PlayStation 4 and PC thanks to a partnership between Sony and Kojima Productions in 2019. So while it’s often considered a “PlayStation game,” it wasn’t made by a first-party PlayStation studio. So the implication seemed to be that Kojima Productions had been acquired by Sony.

Then, over an hour later, Kojima put out a follow-up tweet apologizing for the misunderstanding, and clarified that Kojima Productions “will continue to be an independent studio.”

Now, Kojima’s Twitter feed is back to its usual Death Stranding fanart retweets and talking about movies. So what exactly was the original tweet and graphic meant to say if not that Kojima Productions had been absorbed into Sony’s first-party stable? That Death Stranding is a game published by PlayStation? Then why use the PlayStation Studios logo? Taking Kojima’s follow-up at face value, we can chalk it up to a bit of carelessness. For now, at least.
