Devolver Digital presentations are always a little different than every other video game showcase during the summer of announcements. Instead of just putting a bunch of trailers in-between people talking to each other about how cool video games are, this publisher produces elaborate skits. Some of which featuring Cascina Caradonna: the actress whose face was used as a model for Dina in The Last of Us Part II (I see you, queen. Keep doing what you’re doing). If that’s not your jam, but you want to know what’s going on with Devolver’s games, look no further than our recap of the show!
Cult of the Lamb – Devolver Digital Showcase 2022
If you haven’t heard much about Massive Monster’s cult-building roguelike, Cult of the Lamb is a mixture of cute aesthetics and horrifying premise as you build up a group of loyal followers. The Devolver presentation included a new animated trailer that just takes you on a tour of the juxtaposition. Though it did finally give the game a release date. Cult of the Lamb will come to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch on August 11, 2022.
Anger Foot – Devolver Digital Showcase 2022
Next up was Anger Foot: which was affectionally referred to by Fanbyte Senior Managing Editor Steven Strom as “3D Hotline Miami.” Which seems like an apt comparison. It delves into the same hyper-violent pop aesthetics as that classic. Just in a first-person perspective instead of an overhead one. Anger Foot is coming to PC sometime in 2023.
The Plucky Squire – Devolver Digital Showcase 2022
Okay, this looks like my shit. The Plucky Squire combines movement through a 3D space and entering 2D ones. Think along the lines of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (a game which has deserved a spiritual successor for some time now).
The Plucky Squire looks real pretty while doing its thing, too. All of the action is framed as a storybook character come to life, moving freely between real and flat spaces while fighting bad guys in the process. The Plucky Squire is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S next year.
Skate Story – Devolver Digital Showcase 2022
If you like skating in video games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but want it captured in a more eye-catching aesthetic, Skate Story might be what you’re looking for. You play as “a demon made of glass and pain.” The game combines skating mechanics with action segments. All of which are then wrapped up in a minimalistic, glassy, polygonal art style that makes it really pop. It’s also coming to PC in 2023.
Skate Story was actually one of the last games that the Fanbyte crew saw at a physical games convention back in 2019 or so. It seemed barebones and honestly a little bit frustrating at the time. Which is why it’s nice to see the game looks to have come a long way in terms of tone and style in the intervening years.
