Some fans believe that Fortnite is teasing a Lord of the Rings crossover through a Rock Kid sandcastle. Epic Games’ battle royale shooter has become renowned for its crossovers, with Fortnite collaborating with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Naruto and more. A Fortnite crossover with Dragon Ball Z is the multiplayer shooter’s latest project, and some believe that Lord of the Rings characters will soon appear on The Island too.

While the wildly successful shooter built its fanbase on engaging battle royale combat, Fortnite has managed to stay relevant through its constant crossover events. Today players are likely to encounter a huge range of pop culture icons while fighting across The Island, ranging from Batman to Darth Vader to Goku. Some real-world celebrities are even playable in Fortnite, with WWE legends John Cena and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson standing out as particularly iconic examples. Some rumors even suggest that the next Fortnite event will involve Eminem, with Slim Shady’s music recently appearing on in-game radio stations.

Renowned Fortnite leaker and news source Shiina (via Twitter) suggests that a Lord of the Rings crossover could be on the horizon. The battle royale’s beloved Rock Kid, who belongs to a family of rock people, can now be found building a sandcastle on the beach. Shiina points out that there are many similarities between this castle and the fortified city of Helm’s Deep from Lord of the Rings. The Rock Kid’s castle shares many architectural features with Helm’s Deep like its cliffside location, large wall and winding ramp. While this may be a mere LOTR reference in Fortnite, it could also be teasing a future crossover.

Fortnite Players Can Visit Helm’s Deep In Miniature

While LOTR characters might be coming to Fortnite, dataminers report that MultiVersus cut Lord of the Rings content before it could be added to the crossover fighting game. The Tolkien Estate, which manages the works of legendary fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien, is reportedly responsible for this content’s removal. While there have been many Lord of the Rings video games in the past, the Tolkien Estate may be hesitant to let Tolkien’s characters engage in crossovers with multiple properties.

Lord of the Rings crossovers are hard to come by, but Fortnite certainly seems to be teasing a collaboration with Tolkien’s world of Middle-earth. Rock Kid’s new castle certainly resembles Helm’s Deep, though only time will tell whether this is more than a mere homage. If a Lord of the Rings event is truly imminent, Fortnite fans should prepare to face Sauron and the One Ring in battle royale combat.

Fortnite is available on all platforms.
