GOTG Holiday Special Is Extremely Funny, Says Karen Gillan

Exclusive: Star Karen Gillan says she thinks The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is “extremely funny” though notes she hasn’t seen it yet.

Star Karen Gillan says she thinks The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is “extremely funny” though notes she hasn’t seen it yet. Gillan is returning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Disney+ special alongside fellow Guardians Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket and Pom Klementieff as Mantis. James Gunn is also back at the helm for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special with a script he penned.

Plot details for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are currently unknown, though Gunn has confirmed its events will lead into the highly anticipated third MCU film, also his final in the franchise. The filmmaker has also teased that multiple MCU heroes will be introduced in the special, including one he considers to be “one of the greatest MCU characters of all time.” With production on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special finally kicking off in February, one star is expressing their excitement for the project.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for her sci-fi thriller-comedy Dual, Karen Gillan shared some insight for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. In looking at Gunn’s recent tease of it being his best project yet, Gillan said it indeed could be and believes it is “extremely funny.” See what Gillan shared below:

“I mean, it could be! I haven’t seen it yet. I don’t know, but it’s totally possible that it is. I think it’s gonna be extremely funny.”

While Gillan’s tease that the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday special is extremely funny lines up with Gunn’s various teases over the past few months for the project, it also may offer some insight into its production. The special was originally set to begin filming in January, though Gunn confirmed that month it was delayed due to a surge in the COVID-19 Omicron variant in Los Angeles. Though Gillan could simply be referring to having not seen daily reels of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, with Gunn saying production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wraps soon, it seems just as likely production on the special has already concluded.

Anticipation has been high for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special as it marks one of Gunn’s two remaining returns to the MCU following his transition to the world of the DC Extended Universe with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Gunn’s various teases on social media and in interviews have helped keep that excitement alive while set photos further bolstered it with the reveal of an Earth-set action scene. Only time will tell if it can live up to the expectations audiences have when The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special hits Disney+ this December.
