Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Plot Details Revealed Via Set Photos

Set photos from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 reveal that it will likely take place on Counter-Earth and feature the High Evolutionary.

Recent photos from the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 reveal plot clues about the latest installment of the Marvel series. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wrapped filming just this week. Few details about the film’s story have been revealed, but as set photos have been released, eagle-eyed fans have been able to piece together information about what the MCU movie will be about. Just last week, there were set photos from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 of humanoid, animal-like creatures in an Earth or Earth-like setting. These photos hinted at the possibility that the MCU would be visiting Counter-Earth, and that the latest movie would have to feature the High Evolutionary.

In the Marvel comics, the High Evolutionary is a human scientist who creates Counter-Earth, an alternate, “pure,” version of Earth in which there are no superhumans. Thanos destroys the original Counter-Earth, and then a new version resurfaces. The new version of Counter-Earth is filled with New Men, humanoid creatures also created by the High Evolutionary. These New Men have human-like minds and capabilities. Because of the set photos from last week, fans have been theorizing about how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will involve Counter-Earth. Counter-Earth has not yet been explored in any of the MCU movies.

Now, a brand new batch of set photos shared by @atlanta_filming has many fans feeling that their Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 theories about Counter-Earth and the High Evolutionary have been confirmed. The first set of photos shows humanoid, animal-like creatures walking around in ’80s clothing, which fuels the theory that the movie will feature New Men. While those photos are certainly intriguing, the main photo fans are excited about is of a police car emblazoned with alien lettering. Based on a translation of the alien language characters (via Cosmic Circus), the front of the car reads “Police,” while the side reads “Counter” and “Earth.” In other words, it’s almost certainly a Counter-Earth police car. These set photos provide overwhelming evidence that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will somehow feature Counter-Earth. Whether the movie will take place entirely on Counter-Earth or if it will be just one of several settings remains to be seen. But since filming did just finish up, fans likely won’t see any more set photos. They’ll probably have to wait until an official trailer is released to learn more details. However, now that it seems almost certain that the movie will feature Counter-Earth, more theorizing can be done about how this will affect what fans already know about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Even more interestingly, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket Racoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), is tied to the High Evolutionary; in the comics, Rocket is actually created by the High Evolutionary. Fans have already been wondering whether Rocket’s backstory will be explored in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Now that Counter-Earth and the High Evolutionary are likely to be involved, the pieces are coming together for a possible Rocket origin story. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t be released until next May, so until then, fans will just have to wait and see.
