Holy Shit, I Would Love a Mass Effect Game Boy Advance Demake

64 Bits, a YouTube channel that makes demade game mockups, has created an absolute dream project for me that I am suddenly resentful of the world hasn’t made real: a Mass Effect demake in the style of Advanced Wars. Holy goddamn shit, I would love to play this.

The video recreates the Virmire mission of the original Mass Effect, all in the cartoony visual style of Advanced Wars. It also sheds the RPG/shooter hybrid gameplay of the original game for the turn-based strategy of its inspiration. The mission it shows has the player choosing to save squadmates Ashley Williams or Kaidan Alenko. Because the people over at 64 Bits are intellectuals and allies to the LGBTQIA+ community, they chose to save Kaidan, which means I’ll forgive them for spelling his name wrong. After the bisexual biotic king has been saved, a battle between protagonist Commander Shepard and Saren Arterius’ forces begins and plays out like an Advanced Wars fight. This means moving characters around the field, calling in airstrikes from the Normandy, and then getting away as a bomb on Virmire goes off.

While the game isn’t real, 64 Bits is selling a poster of the fake box art it made for the video, which features default male Commander Shepard, Tali’Zorah vas Normandy, Garrus Vakarian, Liara T’Soni, and Urdnot Wrex. Sure, I’ll have to deal with the psychic damage of knowing this perfect thing will never actually exist, but at least I can look at the art of what it might have looked like if someone at BioWare greenlit the project.

As for real Mass Effect games, the team at BioWare is working on the next entry in the science fiction series. But we don’t know much about it. That hasn’t stopped people from speculating. Perhaps to an unreasonable degree. But the studio also put out a remastered collection of the original trilogy last year.
