How The Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre Influenced 2022 Reboot Movie

Texas Chainsaw Massacre director David Blue Garcia has recently opened up about how he was inspired by the original 1974 film while filming his sequel

Texas Chainsaw Massacre director David Blue Garcia opens up about how he was inspired by the original 1974 film. Director Tobe Hooper’s original film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is arguably one of the most influential horror films of all time. Many consider the film to be the first film in the modern slasher genre that was later popularized by John Carpenter’s Halloween. As The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has spawned numerous sequels and even a reboot series, it’s hard to imagine that it all started as a small indy project back in the early 70s.

It’s been 48 years since the original film’s release, and in that time, fans have been treated to three direct sequels, a reboot in 2003, a prequel to the reboot, a 3D film, and a prequel to the original 1974 film. Now, Netflix has entered their own installment into the Texas Chainsaw franchise with Garcia’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Similarly to David Gordon Green’s Halloween series, this newest film retcons all of the previous entries in the series, acting as a direct sequel to Hooper’s 1974 film. Texas Chainsaw Massacre takes place nearly fifty years after the original, and follows a group of young friends who are terrorized by the iconic character Leatherface in a remote Texas town.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, director Garcia speaks about how the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre inspired him while filming. For Garcia, the most important aspect that he wanted to capture in his new film was the “spirit of the filmmaking” of the original. Garcia has also revealed that he does not like to watch movies while he’s making one. Due to this, Garcia watched the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and then “didn’t watch anything else for two months” during the production of his new film. For Garcia, this gave him an idea for what he wanted to do with his Texas Chainsaw film without “actually directly copying anything from the original.” See Garcia’s full quote below:

“For me, it was kind of the spirit. The spirit of the filmmaking of that first movie. I don’t like to watch movies while I make movies. So I watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original, and then I didn’t watch anything else for two months while I shot this. To me, it just kind of gives me an idea for what I want to do. But I’m not actually directly copying anything from the original. It just gave me sort of a feel.

Something that stood out to me about the original that not a lot of people talk about, is how darkly funny it is. So I made sure to bring a little bit of levity into this film as well. You might have seen it, the bus scene when Leatherface walks on and all the characters raise their cell phones. That’s one of the first things I added when I came on.”

According to Garcia, another element from the original film that he wanted to be sure was included was humor. While comedy is not necessarily the first thing one thinks of when discussing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, it was an important element for Garcia to include. This does truly show Garcia’s dedication to staying true to the original film. Many entries in the series – particularly those after the 2003 reboot – have dedicated themselves to making the films as dark and gory as possible, forgetting that Hooper’s original films were infused with dark humor (especially Hooper’s sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2).

It truly does seem that Garcia was passionate about making this newest installment in the Texas Chainsaw franchise as true as possible to Hooper’s original horror masterpiece. It is clear that Garcia has great respect for the source material, and has taken great care to create something faithful yet original for fans and newcomers to the Texas Chainsaw series to enjoy. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is streaming on Netflix now, ready to invite all audiences back to be terrified in rural Texas once again.
