League of Legends Glitch Disables All Chat, Players Rejoice

League of Legends is getting even more unruly than usual with the sudden appearance of an emoji-spawning, potentially chat-destroying glitch.

Widely spread in a Tweet by FNATIC streamer Elosanta, players are able to input “%i:” into the match’s chat to activate the glitch and disable chat for both teams. Some players are stressed about the lack of communication in ranked modes, while many others are actually enjoying the peace and quiet break from virtual harassment.

big bug in league, if u type “%i:” u will disable chat for both teams. type “%” to enable chat again.

can also put random emojies in chat i will link the image under @RiotSupport pic.twitter.com/rnmxZx14fK

Players can reverse the glitch by typing “%” into chat, but do you really want to turn chat back on? Imagine: you’re in the middle of a match of League of Legends, and it’s getting heated. Your teammate makes a mistake and starts blaming you. But luckily, right before your fellow summoner hurls an ungodly slur at you, chat is instantly disabled. It kind of sounds like a divine blessing.

This fresh League exploit also allows players access to in-chat emojis from a pool of image codes, a communication option that Riot Games has been averse to adding over the years in favor of Emote pop-ups. Some of the emojis found and spammable within in-game chat include ranked emblems, icons for Champion Passive Abilities, and lightning bolts. Riot hasn’t patched or commented on this League bug, but this breaks so much of the user interface that it’s safe to assume a Hotfix is incoming.

League of Legends is toxic as hell. I like the game, and it has its unforgettable moments, but it is no secret that it is impossible to play and not have somebody flaming you in genuinely evil ways. In October of last year, Riot even acknowledged how horrid the in-game communication can get saying “While /all chat can be the source of fun social interaction between teams, as well as some good-hearted banter, right now negative interactions outweigh the positives.” In that same blog post the company played around with the idea of patching out All-Chat entirely in League of Legends games, but ultimately Riot seems to have backed off after testing it with live, regional matches over the past few months.

It’s pretty funny that this chat glitch is actually making communication in League of Legends more tolerable. And it also finally grants players the ability to accentuate their sentences with everybody’s favorite digital flair: the emoji. So, I kinda hope Riot doesn’t rush to fix this one.
