Lightyear Movie Details About Villain Zurg Are A Spoiler Says Producer

Lightyear producer Galyn Susman says details about Emperor Zurg are a spoiler, and therefore they can’t reveal much before the movie’s release.

Galyn Susman, the producer of the upcoming Pixar film Lightyear, has stated that details about the evil Emperor Zurg are spoilers for the movie, and therefore she cannot reveal much before its release. The film will act as a spinoff of the Toy Story franchise, presenting Buzz Lightyear’s origin story. Voiced by Chris Evans, the Space Ranger embarks on a sci-fi adventure throughout the cosmos.

The evil Emperor Zurg was first seen in Pixar’s Toy Story 2, which was released in 1999. Introduced as the villain of Buzz Lightyear’s franchise, Zurg was voiced by the movie’s director, Andrew Stanton. Soon after Toy Story 2’s release, a hand-drawn spinoff series called Buzz Lightyear of Star Command aired on television featuring the titular hero, along with a new crew and his arch-nemesis. The “Star Command” name has made its way to many forms of media, including Disney theme park rides.

In an interview with Collider, Susman professed that as far as the upcoming spinoff film is concerned, details about the evil emperor are being kept under wraps. As seen in the trailers, Zurg (voiced by James Brolin) appears to be some sort of giant robot (or possibly a man in a robotic suit) who seems hell-bent on destroying Buzz. The only facts Susman did share are that Zurg is determined, if not infuriated in his quest. Read the snippet from the interview below:

We see that Zurg is clearly angry about something, but we don’t know what his purpose is yet. What can you say about that character?

[director Angus] MacLANE: I’ve been told that we can’t talk about Zurg.

SUSMAN: Not just yet. You don’t want us to spoil it for you. He’s angry about something, sure. He has a purpose. He has a mission.

Buzz Lightyear and Zurg

Susman also explained that, since she has worked with Pixar since the original Toy Story in ’95, she’s gotten to see the franchise evolve from the inside with television specials and short films. She showcased her excitement for working on Lightyear, something that is “related, but utterly different.” She feels like she’s “graduated because I’m getting to now do this film that, if somebody had said to me, ‘If you could only make one film in your life, what would it be?’ I would’ve said sci-fi.”

A brand-new trailer for Lightyear was recently released, revealing a few more plot details, including the Space Ranger’s run-in with relativity. During his journey to another planet, he has accidentally traveled 62 years into the future. The movie will also feature the voices of Keke Palmer and Taika Waititi as fellow astronauts Izzy Hawthorne and Mo Morrison, as well as Peter Sohn as Buzz’s robotic feline companion Sox.

As far as the trailers go, Emperor Zurg seems to be one of the most intriguing aspects of Lightyear, with his dark and menacing appearance. Having not spoken a word in any of the film’s marketing yet, the fact that details about him are being kept secret adds even more to his ominousness. For now, audiences will just have to wait and see what the villain’s true intentions are when the movie hits theaters this June.
