Love & Thunder Director Teases Russell Crowe's Zeus Performance

Details about who Russel Crowe’s Zeus is in Thor: Love and Thunder are teased as Waititi applauds the actor for his performance in the upcoming film.

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi praises Russell Crowe’s performance as Zeus in the movie. Returning for his second feature in the Marvel universe, Waititi is uniting the humorous tone from Thor: Ragnarok with a sincere exploration of the challenging emotional weight Thor is carrying. The director has remained strict with the information he releases about the new film, but with exciting characters – new and old – popping up across the galaxy, Marvel’s fourth Thor film promises adventure, comedy, and sincere emotional growth from the hero.

Caught in the midst of his own existential crisis, the God of Thunder embarks on a journey to understand himself and the universe. However, the hero’s mission is interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, forcing Thor to enlist help from his friends on an intergalactic expedition. Tessa Thompson will provide guidance as King Valkyrie, with Waititi supporting as Korg, and the return of Natalie Portman as Jane – this time with the ability to wield Mjölnir. With Thor and Jane, a.k.a. Mighty Thor, standing side by side, the group will head to Olympus to consult with Zeus.

Waititi gives away a few hints in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. While information about Zeus was not disclosed, Waititi did reveal how impressed he was by Crowe’s performance. Humorously, the director shared that since the two are friends, he often forgets the incredible talent Crowe contains. Given the opportunity to direct him, Waititi rediscovered the caliber of talent Crowe possesses, leading Zeus in a direction audiences have never seen from the actor. Waititi is even more secretive about Russell Crowe’s role as the god Zeus, but teases that Crowe plays the role in “a way you’ve never seen Russell before.”

“I consider Russell a friend, and I forget that there are some friends I have who are really incredible at what they do,” Waititi says with a laugh. “When I was on set with Russell, I was like, ‘Oh shit, that’s right! You’re Russell Crowe! You’re a really amazing actor!'”

The elusive nature of who Zeus is has sparked numerous fan theories, with some suggesting Zeus may not be an ally to Thor. Others suggest that the addition of Zeus is merely a launching point for new heroes to join the universe, and since numerous pantheons are being explore in Phase 5 of the MCU, there could be a new strong man on the horizon in the form of Hercules. However fun these theories are, none hold substantial weight since Marvel has kept the character under lock and key with every preview of Thor 4. Waititi’s celebration of Crowe’s acting does provide an exciting hint that whoever Zeus is, he will be on screen enough to deliver a remarkable performance unlike anything else.

And, even if Zeus appears to be antagonistic at heart, Thor and his team of heroes will also have to deal with Gorr, who could be Marvel’s best villain yet. Thor: Love and Thunder should deliver a similar brand of comedy as the third feature did, balanced with the threat of destruction looming over New Asgard, and over Thor’s self esteem. Waititi has been applauded for his unique addition to the MCU, arguably creating one of Marvel’s best films to date. This newest feature has high standards to satisfy, however with a diverse cast of characters and a unique premise, the film is strongly favored to deliver on the hype.
