Natalie Portman was “doing the whole protein shakes [thing]” in her extensive training for Thor: Love & Thunder return as Jane Foster / Mighty Thor.
Thor: Love & Thunder star Natalie Portman explains her the workout routine required to prepare for her role in the upcoming MCU film. Portman plays Jane Foster aka Mighty Thor in the latest Thor film. The actress previously appeared in the role in Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and very briefly in Avengers: Endgame. With Love & Thunder, Portman returns to the MCU to play alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, and other actors including Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, and Love & Thunder director Taika Waititi as Korg.
As the posters and early publicity would indicate, Thor: Love & Thunder is thought to be much more Mighty Thor-focused than previous Thor films. Writer-director Waititi has stated this this Thor film leans into the romantic plots more than the previous films, though it is unclear whether that means a romantic reuniting of Thor and Jane or not. It is also clear from the early images of Love & Thunder that Jane wields the hammer in some scenes, although it is yet unclear exactly how that occurs within the story.

Now, Portman reveals the intense workout routine that went into the role of Jane Foster. According to Total Film, the stunt doubles in the Love & Thunder cast “did the really hard stuff,” but Portman still had to carry a fair amount of weight in the department of physical activity and stunt work. This included working with the weight of the cape, which Portman claims required some upper body strength. Portman also says that she “was doing the whole protein shakes [thing]” during the extensive training process for Love & Thunder. Check out the full statement from Portman:
“I trained for a long time before and during, and I was doing the whole protein shakes [thing]. It really helped prepare me for the level of action that we ended up doing. We had incredible stunt doubles who did the really hard stuff, but there’s still a great deal of running and jumping and swords and hammer-fighting. It was definitely helpful to be strong. To have that weight of the cape all day, you want to have some upper-body strength.”
Even if Portman did not do the most intense stunt work, it seems clear to her that her strength training greatly helped with the process. And it shows. Aided by her cape and armored costume, Portman’s Mighty Thor looks just as strong as Thor in the initial posters and trailers for Love & Thunder. While producer Kevin Feige does admit that the special effects team boosted Mighty Thor’s height a bit for the part, he maintains that this was the only major computer alteration for Portman’s role. The rest can then be attributed to Portman’s strict training regimen.
These training and workout details just add to the excitement about the epic action sequences to come in Thor: Love & Thunder. Portman teases a high “level of action” for the film, suggesting battle sequences of epic proportions. Waititi has shown considerable excitement for Jane Foster’s Thor: Love & Thunder return, which he advocated for despite her not making an appearance in Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. As Portman returns to the role after almost a decade, it remains to be seen just what updates and changes Waititi has in store.
