Pokémon Fan Shows Off Massive Collection of Over 500 Crochet Creatures

One Pokémon fan showed off their massive collection of over 500 handmade Pokémon currently in existence with the goal of crocheting them all.

A single Pokémon fan has crocheted over 500 different species of Pokémon into one huge collection, and there are even more to come. As of the release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, there is now a grand total of 905 different species of pocket monsters. So to have over half that total number in crochet form is an incredible achievement.

As always, Pokémon is a major source of inspiration for all sorts of fan works. One only needs to take a glance at a Pokémon-themed subreddit on any given day to see a new crop of creations from passionate players. There are all kinds of drawings and paintings, including hyper-realistic renditions of famous Pokémon and original animations. Artists are also posting their “fakémon” all the time, which are custom ideas for new Pokémon in the style of longtime series art director Ken Sugimori. Cooking and baking is another extremely popular category, but crafting is even more prominent.

Crochet is often seen in the Pokémon community, but Reddit user pokemoncrochet has now made over 500 individual Pokémon in yarn form. They posted a compilation of their creations so far, which is nearly nine minutes long and doesn’t contain any duplicates (with the exception of a few shiny versions). According to the video, pokemoncrochet has been working on this project on a regular basis for years, starting all the way back in 2015. They are planning to freehand crochet one of every Pokémon, and have now reached 503 total.

In response to a comment, pokemoncrochet says that they use a reference image for each Pokémon and copy the image. While it may seem difficult to convert the 2-D pixel sprites into three-dimensional crochets, pokemoncrochet actually reveals that the process is rather simple. So far, pokemoncrochet has been making roughly 100 Pokémon per year and wants to line them all up in National Dex order once they complete every last one.

Crocheting one of every Pokémon in existence is a daunting undertaking, but pokemoncrochet certainly seems to be enjoying the journey. They have plenty of impressive work to show already, and other fans can follow them on social media to see their daily progress. On the other hand, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are scheduled to launch later this year, and will no doubt add a load of new Pokémon into the mix – possibly pushing the total to more than 1000. Only time will tell if pokemoncrochet can spin up new Pokémon faster than Nintendo can unveil them with each new generation.
