Ragnarok Gets November Release Date, Three Special Editions

Ragnarok Gets November Release Date, Three Special Editions

After some delays in announcement and some controversy after fans demonstrated no chill, Sony Santa Monica has announced God of War: Ragnarok’s release date. The sequel will come to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on November 9.

Ragnarok is the sequel to the 2018 reboot of the franchise, and follows series protagonist Kratos through Norse mythology as he also attempts to raise his son Atreus. The game will also act as the conclusion to God of War’s Norse storyline, ending as a duology rather than extending into a trilogy or more like the series’ original Greek mythology run. The announcement also came with a cinematic trailer, which shows Kratos and Atreus getting ready to fight Fenrir, a figure in Norse mythology.

The announcement came alongside the reveal of two special editions: a Collector’s Edition and the Jötnar Edition, as well as a digital bundle that will include some in-game content called the Digital Deluxe Edition. The digital bundle will give you access to the game on both PS4 and PS5, as well as cosmetics for both Kratos and Atreus, a digital artbook, avatars for your PSN profiles, and a theme for your PlayStation 4, but not PS5 as those are no longer supported on the new system.

The full list of content in the Digital Deluxe Edition reads as follows:

Full God of War Ragnarök game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
Kratos Darkdale Armor**
Atreus Darkdale Attire (cosmetic) **
Darkdale Blades Handles for the Blades of Chaos**
Darkdale Axe Grip for the Leviathan Axe**
Official God of War Ragnarök Digital Soundtrack
Dark Horse Digital Mini Artbook
Avatar Set
PlayStation 4 Theme

If you’re more about physical goods than digital ones, the Collector’s Edition and Jötnar Edition will include a lot of cool things…just not a physical copy of the game itself. So keep this in mind if you’re wanting a disc to put in your PlayStation in November: both bundles will only include a download code, despite also including a steelbook case. Both collections will include all content found in the Digital Deluxe Edition, but also some physical collectibles. The aforementioned Steelbook is a draw for me, but the Collector’s Edition includes a Dwarven Dice Set, two Vanir Twins carved figures, and a 16-inch replica of Mjölnir, Thor’s hammer.

The Jötnar Edition contains all of the above, but has a few extras, as well. A 7-inch vinyl record of two tracks from Ragnarok’s soundtrack seems to be the biggest distinguisher, but there’s also a different dice set, a pin set representing the three main characters, a ring, and cloth map.

If you want to get a sense of scale for both physical editions, Sony also released an unboxing video featuring Ryan Hurst, the actor behind the game’s depiction of Thor, who will be one of the villains of the game, as foreshadowed at the end of God of War (2018). Check out the video below:

Pre-orders for all these editions begin next week on Friday, July 15 at 10 a.m. local time. Though, Sony Santa Monica stopped short of actually naming a price for any of them. The PlayStation Blog post also confirms upgrading from the PlayStation 4 version to the PlayStation 5 version will cost you an extra $10, unless you buy one of these editions, which includes both versions.
