Schmigadoon Renewed For Season 2, Will Parody ‘60s & ‘70s Musicals

Apple TV+ renews Schmigadoon for season 2 almost a year after season 1’s release; the new show will parody musicals of the 1960s and ’70s.

Apple TV+ has renewed Schmigadoon! for season 2 almost a year after the show’s release. The musical comedy TV series is created by the Despicable Me writer duo Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. In season 1, the show parodied the Golden Age musicals of the 1940s and ’50s, with Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live) and Keegan-Michael Key (Wonka) leading the ensemble cast alongside Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski, Liam Quiring-Nkindi, and Ann Harada. Schmigadoon! received largely positive reviews from critics, although some pointed out that its inside-theater jokes only entertained particular audiences.

Now, Apple TV+ has picked up Schmigadoon! for season 2. The new show will pick up from where season 1 had left off, but the story has been changed as the series will now satirize musicals from the ’60s and ’70s. Joining the series for season 2 as regulars are Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Tituss Burgess and In The Heights’ Patrick Page. The original season 1 cast is also expected to return, with the exception of Armisen and Quiring-Nkindi, who have, so far, not been listed to star in the new show. It remains unclear why the actors have exited Schmigadoon!. Additionally, there is also no word on what characters Burgess and Page would play in season 2.

Although Schmigadoon! had ended with a cliffhanger, Michael Key made it clear soon after the season 1 finale that the leads Josh and Melissa won’t simply escape back to normal life after crossing the bridge, in case the series gets renewed. But, as the new details suggest, they won’t remain stuck in the same place (or same timeline) either. At the moment, it’s hard to predict what season 2 would entail for the lovebirds, but given that Burgess and Page have joined the bandwagon, fans can count on Schmigadoon! season 2 to be filled with hilarity, zest, and soulful ballads.
