Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Reminds Us Eggman's Assistant is Gay for Him on Valentine's Day

It’s Valentine’s Day, so you can always expect brands to be capitalizing on the made-up holiday to bring attention to their upcoming projects. That includes the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 live-action movie, which is out here making sure everyone knows that Agent Stone, the assistant of Jim Carrey’s Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, is madly in love with him. It’s text.

This was done through a brief clip posted to the movie’s social channels starts with the titular blue blur doing some heart hands, then shifts to actual footage from the movie where Stone, played by Lee Majdoub, is working as a barista after Robotnik’s disappearance at the end of the first film. And boy howdy, man is clearly in his feelings about his long-lost love. Until one day, he shows up with a shaved head and a wild mustache, all more in line with how the character looks in the Sonic the Hedgehog games. Upon Robotnik’s entry into the coffee shop, the light returns to Stone’s eyes and he’s jazzed to be alive once again. Then we see him fall for the old “down low, too slow” bit, which is less fun. But the whole thing ends with latte art of the two with hearts around their heads. Gay.

Robotnik, have a latte. You’re not yourself when you’re uncaffeinated. #HappyValentinesDay and happy Sonic Movie-versary! ???? pic.twitter.com/IFlPHShzwt

Much of this dynamic was subtext in first movie, and even this is still mostly a gag. So I guess we’ll see if this goes any farther in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when it comes to theaters on April 8.

More Sonic:

Beyond Robotnik and his gay assistant, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is bringing Idris Elba’s Knuckles into the live-action universe, who made his public debut during the Game Awards in December with a trailer.
