Star-Lord and Thor Should Kiss in Love and Thunder

Star-Lord and Thor Should Kiss in Love and Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder is sneaking up on us, as the fourth movie focused on Marvel’s interpretation of the Norse god of thunder is getting its first trailer just about two-and-a-half months before it comes to theaters on July 8. And it looks pretty neat. Chris Hemsworth’s version of Thor is trying to figure out what his place is in the universe after the universe-shaking events of Avengers: Endgame, and he’s not the only one who’s got a new lease on life, as Natalie Portman’s Jane is returning as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the female Thor already seen in the comics. But you know what I want to focus on right now? The scene near the end of the trailer where Peter “Star-Lord” Quill and Thor are chatting. In the clip, the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy tells the god of thunder, “you ever feel lost, just look into the eyes of the people that you love.” As he looks at his team of galaxy guardians, Thor attempts to intercept his gaze. To which Quill says “not me.” And Thor insists he was “just listening,” before looking away.

Do you want to know how “no thoughts, head empty” I am about the Marvel Cinematic Universe these days? I watch these trailers and let them wash over me, as my comic knowledge only goes so far, so I just await the spectacle that will follow when Marvel finally puts the movie on the big screen. That’s been especially easy lately, as I didn’t know characters like Shang-Chi or the Eternals at all before their movies. As such, I don’t really want things from Marvel movies anymore. Not unlike Thor himself, I don’t really know what I want these days. Spider-Man: No Way Home’s various multiverse pulls were about as close to wish-fulfillment as I have for this franchise. But you know what? I want Peter Quill and Thor to kiss.

The Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite subset of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the game Eidos Montreal put out last year really solidified that. But what that game lacked was any actual recognition of Star-Lord’s bisexuality. Will the Marvel Cinematic Universe make that jump? Probably not, even though Eternals featured a pretty significant queer love story. But Peter Quill is single right now with Gamora’s death in Avengers: Infinity War, so just let him and Thor kiss. Or any man, I don’t even care anymore. I have stopped being invested in the Thor and Peter Quill kiss in the time it took me to get to the end of this paragraph and am no longer picky. I see Star-Lord in the proximity of a man and I become the fictionalized version of Daniel Radcliffe seen in Bojack Horseman egging the titular character to kiss Mr. Peanut Butter.

Anyway, here’s the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer:
