A new fan poster for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker imagines how the movie should have really ended. Audiences were ecstatic to hear Star Wars: Episode VII was happening after Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, but the studio has had more than a few issues expanding the franchise on the big screen. While The Force Awakens got mostly positive reviews, it is often described as a remake of A New Hope. Things only went downhill from there, with The Last Jedi becoming the most divisive Star Wars film to date and The Rise of Skywalker getting mixed reviews at best.

One of the biggest issues with The Rise of Skywalker was the return of Emperor Palpatine after Darth Vader seemingly killed him at the end of Return of the Jedi. Many were disappointed that Snoke was killed off in The Last Jedi without learning more about his character and that a clone of Palpatine with the original Sith Lord’s consciousness became The Rise of Skywalker’s main villain. Despite Rey’s duel with Palpatine being a visual spectacle, it is often considered a disappointing ending to the sequel trilogy.

While Rey heard the voices of deceased Jedi including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, and Mace Windu, among several others, a new fan poster imagines their Force ghosts actually appearing in the final act. Along with the poster, tilian_creative pitches an alternate ending where Luke returns to defeat Palpatine for good alongside Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Qui-Gon Jinn. Check out the artist’s original poster and story idea below:

If characters like Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin, and the others seen in the above art would have returned to support Rey, it’s possible it could have been criticized for being purely fan service. Many believe Palpatine was brought back as the main villain to course correct what Rian Johnson did with The Last Jedi, so it’s possible infusing the ending with even more fan service wouldn’t have gone over well. Plus, with Force ghosts usually not being able to interfere with the physical world, aside from Yoda’s brief scene in The Last Jedi, it’s unclear how much help they really would have been able to provide Rey.

Even if they wouldn’t have been able to help fight Palpatine, it would have made sense for them to appear to Rey before she defeats one of the most powerful characters in the franchise. It was no doubt much cheaper to only include these actors’ voices instead of paying them to physically film scenes for on-screen cameos. That being said, seeing so many popular characters return as Force ghosts would have been quite the spectacle even if it wasn’t crucial to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s overall story.
