Thanos Killed an Entire Race of Beings More Powerful Than Galactus

Thanos may be strong, but Marvel’s Mad Titan managed to kill an entire race of cosmic-powered beings even stronger than Galactus himself.

Marvel’s Thanos is one of the company’s most feared villains, capable of supreme destruction – but the Mad Titan’s true power is rarely seen. Even without the Infinity Gauntlet and the accompanying six Infinity Stones, Thanos is a formidable opponent, far stronger than his incarnation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe played by actor Josh Brolin. A classic Thanos tale, told in Marvel Universe: The End, chronicles how Thanos met an entire race of beings with power that rivaled Galactus himself…and killed them.

Thanos destroying beings with power stronger than Galactus is no mean feat, considering that Galactus is one of the most powerful forces in the Marvel Universe. The heroes of Earth are ants to the Devourer of Worlds, who could easily wipe them out in seconds, along with entire armadas and even planets. Only with the power of the Infinity Stones does Thanos stand a chance of beating Galactus in a fight; it’s fortunate for him (and for the universe) that Galactus considers himself above such moral concepts as good and evil, choosing instead to eat planets out of a desire to satiate his hunger rather than a desire to kill billions.

In the epic Marvel Universe: The End, Thanos is the star in a story chronicling the final days of the Marvel Universe. The Earth is threatened by the omnipotent villain, Pharaoh Akhenaten, who derives his phenomenal power from a cosmic artifact known as the Heart of the Universe. The artifact is guarded by the Celestial Order (not the Celestials of Eternals fame), who are orders of magnitude more powerful than Galactus. Since Thanos cannot defeat Akhenaten without the Heart of the Universe, he vows to take it from the Celestial Order and kill them all…which he actually does.

The Celestial Order are nigh-omnipotent beings who work behind the scenes to shape the universe. They are supremely powerful beings of contained energy, and even one of them could perhaps easily tear Galactus apart. To see Thanos dispatch them shows his true power – and tenacity. Upon acquiring the Heart of the Universe, Thanos goes on to murder Galactus and even the Living Tribunal, essentially the right hand of the One Above All.

Ever since Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos has returned to comics in force, appearing in the Eternals books, Avengers: Mech Strike, Avengers Tech-On, and many more storylines. But comic book readers know that the character was still incredibly powerful long before his appearances on screen. If Thanos can destroy an entire race of beings more powerful than Galactus, the superheroes of Earth would do well to make sure the Heart of the Universe is never a factor in his plans again.
