The Batman's Michael Giacchino Score Makes Arkham Knight More Terrifying

A Batman fan edit places Michael Giacchino’s score for the new film over the opening moments of the 2015 video game, Batman: Arkham Knight.

A fan edit has taken Michael Giacchino’s score for The Batman and placed it over the opening cinematic for the blockbuster video game, Batman: Arkham Knight. The release of Matt Reeves’ The Batman has been met by critics and fans alike with overwhelming praise, with some calling Robert Pattinson’s take on the Dark Knight the greatest yet. The film has also proved successful at the box office, meaning it’s likely that this new reimagining of the mythos is here to stay, with spin-off series’ in the works at HBO Max and a direct sequel hoped to soon follow.

One of the most praised elements of the film was the musical score composed by Giacchino, who had previously worked in the superhero sub-genre with The Incredibles, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Giacchino’s score was greatly anticipated due to his impressive body of work and the marketing seemed to acknowledge this with the composer dropping individual singles of Batman, The Riddler, and Catwoman’s leitmotifs ahead of the film and the official soundtrack’s release. Within the film, critics hailed Giacchino’s score as being a key element of the atmosphere, perfectly underscoring the moody, noir tone that the film was aiming for.

Reddit user, ShrekTheDragonSlayer, has created a fan edit that has layered one of the most iconic tracks from The Batman’s soundtrack over the 2015 video game, Batman: Arkham Knight. The moment taken from the game is the opening cinematic after an abandoned Gotham City is overrun by criminals while Jim Gordon monologues that only the Batman can save them as the Dark Knight watches over his city for, what might be, the last time. This has been rescored to the track “Can’t Fight City Halloween,” which plays in a similar moment in The Batman, as Robert Pattinson narrates over the state of the city as criminals run rampant.

The edit is quite fitting, and it’s easy to see where the connection between the two scenes arose, both featuring a character’s monologue over a Gotham City that is devolving into chaos and crime. The track, which is the first one listed on the official soundtrack, is a perfect mood setter, as it brings to mind the sense of a dark, foreboding atmosphere that effectively characterizes the streets of Gotham. This is then capped with the main theme for Batman growing louder and more intense, building up for the character’s reveal, which has also been beautifully synced with the game’s cinematic.

With the Batman: Arkham games being a hugely successful series that redefined the quality expected from superhero tie-ins, it’s almost certain that it must have had an influence on The Batman at some level. Pattinson’s more armored costume seems evocative of the metallic batsuit that the Caped Crusader dons in Arkham Knight and the darker take on the Riddler (Paul Dano) was previously seen in the Arkham games, which reframed him as more of a Jigsaw-style sadist. The Arkham series was also hugely inspired by Batman: The Animated Series, sharing several voice actors and other creatives that made the series feel like a spiritual successor. The Batman also seemed to take influence from the 90’s touchstone, with the line “I’m Vengeance” being lifted directly from the series and Pattinson citing the Mask of the Phantasm film as the best to understand the character. This fan edit appears to tie this mutual cycle of inspiration together, creating a fan-pleasing fusion of different Batman adaptations that speaks to the Dark Knight’s longevity and flexibility across different mediums.
