The Last Airbender TikTok Reimagines Cartoon as a Reality TV Show

An Avatar: The Last Airbender fan imagines what Nickelodeon’s popular cartoon could look like if it was a live-action reality TV show instead.

An Avatar: The Last Airbender TikTok reimagines the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon as a reality TV show. Avatar ran for three seasons between 2005 and 2008 and became one of Nickelodeon’s most critically acclaimed series. On the surface, Avatar: The Last Airbender appears to just be a kids’ show, but Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were able to successfully implement themes of imperialism, genocide, destiny, and free will. The series was followed by The Legend of Korra, which took place 70 years after its predecessor.

Part of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s charm is its core group of characters. Sokka and Katara quickly bond with Aang after discovering him in an iceberg near the Southern Water Tribe’s village and agree to help him as he ventures to master the four elements. Toph Beifong, one of the show’s most powerful earthbenders, joined the gang at the beginning of season 2. Toph not only helped Aang in his journey to defeat Fire Lord Ozai but also returned in The Legend of Korra. One of the running gags of Avatar was Toph joking about her being blind since birth and the other characters forgetting she can’t see. One of the most well-known blind jokes in the series is when Katara comments on how beautiful the stars are before saying, “too bad you can’t see them Toph!”

Katara’s roast is now being used as the basis of a TikTok, with winrow_the_square imagining how the scene could have played out if Avatar: The Last Airbender was a reality TV show. The TikTok user plays all of the characters, with Katara complaining about Toph not pulling her own weight in the group. The video then includes talking heads of Aang, Sokka, Toph, and even Appa’s reaction to Katara’s brutal comment.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has always been praised, but the series saw a new wave of popularity in 2020 when Avatar came to Netflix during the pandemic. Netflix hopes to continue profiting off of this popularity with their live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, which is currently in production. The live-action adaptation includes an entirely new cast, including Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), and Ian Ousley (Sokka). DiMartino and Konietzko were initially involved; however, the creators left the project in August 2020 due to creative differences with Netflix.

Fans of the animated series shouldn’t be too stressed though since DiMartino and Konietzko are leading Nickelodeon’s Avatar Studios, with plans to release new TV shows, spinoffs, shorts, and movies. Avatar: The Last Airbender only seems to be getting more popular as time passes, as evident by the above TikTok and the countless other fan videos and artworks. Avatar Studios probably won’t ever produce a fictional reality TV show involving Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph, but it does make for a humorous skit for people who have seen Avatar: The Last Airbender.
