Why Nate Had A Gun In Euphoria Season 2 Finale Explained By Star

Euphoria star Jacob Elordi explains why he believes his character, Nate, would bring a gun to confront his father in the season 2 finale.

Star Jacob Elordi explains why his character brought a gun to confront his father in the Euphoria season 2 finale. Elordi plays Nate Jacobs in the popular HBO Max show, who serves as a kind of antagonist who is dealing with his unhinged father, Cal (Eric Dane), and love triangle involving his ex, Maddy (Alexa Demie) and her best friend, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney). Elordi has been a key player in the show since it began in 2019, which has become the most-tweeted about series of the decade so far on Twitter.

In the Euphoria season 2 finale, Nate is seen driving to his father’s place of business, drinking a beer while loading a revolver with shells. Nate had just left Lexi’s play in a fit of rage at the end of the last episode, so it’s implied that he’s in a state that would lead to killing his father, who left the family this season after confessing his unfaithful sins and desire to restart his life without them. Nate confronts Cal, the gun in his pocket, eventually taking it out to show him, before pulling out a thumb drive instead, showing that it was all a ruse to get revenge and have his father arrested, with police moments away.

However, the question of why Nate brought the gun in the first place has been one of debate. While talking to Variety, Elordi is asked about Nate’s intentions with bringing the gun to confront his father, to which he says could be multitude of reasons. The relationship between Cal and Nate has been contentious from the start, with a lot of anger, bitterness, and resentment, and Elordi says that one reason for the gun is that Nate simply isn’t sure how it will all go down. Elordi believes that Nate is “terrified” of Cal and has a desire to kill him, which in many ways would be like killing his own demons. Here’s Elordi’s quote:

He’s probably not sure how it’s gonna go. He’s terrified of his dad, and a big part of him wants to kill his dad — to put a bullet in the head of his demons. He’s also at a point of no return, and is being completely unhinged at that point.

Elordi is best known outside of Euphoria for his work as Noah Flynn in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth franchise. The actor will next appear in Adrian Lyne’s Deep Water with Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, as well as the drama He Went That Way with Zachary Quinto. Dane, best known for his work on The Last Ship and Grey’s Anatomy, will next be seen in the thriller Little Dixie with Frank Grillo, as well as the drama National Anthem with Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney and singer Halsey.

Both Nate and Cal’s journeys in Euphoria season 2 have been turbulent, making Nate’s desire to carry a gun fairly believable. Both characters have been equally unhinged throughout the season with both reaching a precipice that would force them to the confrontation that unfolded in the season finale. It would be a point-of-no-return moment had Nate shot his father, disrupting a number of storylines that still have to play out. However, Euphoria isn’t known for being seeped in reality, so it would also fit well within the confines of their dramatic universe if Nate had made a different decision. Thankfully, both survived the altercation, although it’s unclear if either will be better as a result.
