Witcher 3: 10 Hidden Details Found By Redditors

With CD Projekt Red having recently confirmed that The Witcher 4 is under development, fans of the series are incredibly excited to see the next iteration of the franchise. Given the success of the TV show The Witcher, there are also a lot of new fans stumbling across the games.

Now that so many people are discovering the series, many are rediscovering some of the many secrets hidden within The Witcher 3. So what are some of the surprising details, tricks, and Easter eggs that fans on Reddit have been finding?

A Living Ecosystem

Many fans admire The Witcher 3 for its amazing graphics and realistic setting, but many aren’t aware of just how realistic it can be. “They made an ecosystem of the wildlife,” says Reddit user iLikeMelons2. “When you kill the wolves in an area, the deer numbers go up because there aren’t any predators. When you kill the deer, the wolves leave the area because there isn’t any prey.”

It’s that admirable attention to detail that shows just how much love and care the developers put into the game. Though most fans will never notice it, realism like that adds a subconscious element to the game that makes it feel more immersive, and really, isn’t that what fans want in a game?

A Scene Out of Game of Thrones

One of the most enjoyable parts of any game is stumbling across a clear and obvious allusion to some other piece of popular media. While it’s usually a one-off reference or a name in a book, The Witcher 3 takes it one step further, and fans love it.

“The dead Tyrion in the sky cell is a classic,” says Reddit user TheSmegalodon1. That’s right — while it’s something many players will never discover in Witcher, Tyrion Lannister died in a sky cell and his remains are there for Geralt to appraise. It’s a fun touch that fans genuinely adore.

Your Choices Matter

While there are many games that promise that decision-making is essential, a lot of them don’t fully deliver. The Witcher 3 isn’t one of them. “Your choices actually matter in this game. Many fates are predicated on your actions. That’s my favorite mechanic,” says Ineedscissors1981 on Reddit.

That sense of the importance of each choice is something that many players love about the game. In fact, one of the things fans want most from The Witcher 4 is a flexible storyline that takes the decision trees from The Witcher 3 a step further. It will be incredible if CD Projekt Red manages it, and one of the things that will really set the franchise apart.

Real Photosynthesis

If a fully functional ecosystem wasn’t enough, plants that mimic real-life foliage are just another step the developers took to make the game even more realistic. “There are more flowers in sunny areas of the village,” says Redditor Qshad0w97. “[The] shadow of the house reduces density of the flowers.”

That is an absolutely mind-blowing level of detail. After all, what other game takes that much care to ensure the realism of its world? If plants can mimic photosynthesis in The Witcher 3, it’s impossible to imagine what intricate worldbuilding the world of The Witcher 4 will have.

Geralt Puts Out His Fire

There’s an old joke about medieval protagonists being murder hobos, traveling around the world and leaving devastation in their midst without any regard for the environment around them. The Witcher 3 does, at times, take that route, but largely works to use small gestures to show Geralt’s care for the world around him.

“When Geralt meditate outdoors, he makes bonfires and when meditation is over, covers them with dirt,” says Reddit user oldnest. It’s a great touch, and one that shows that Geralt isn’t one to let the world burn needlessly. Where he goes, he tries to clean up his mess as much as he can. It’s a small detail that really helps the player attach themselves to Geralt, even if it’s something only die-hard fans know about The Witcher 3.

Realistic NPCs

For players trying to get invested in the world around them, it isn’t all that challenging. Even with Geralt being such a fully realized character, the world around him is perfectly active as well. Whereas most games have NPCs cycle through one or two actions, The Witcher 3 takes an entirely different approach.

“I fast traveled to Fox Hollow in Toussaint and, just counting, was able to see NPCs performing at least 10-15 different actions or animations,” says Reddit user shadowdash66. “These are just in ONE town, granted you can see most of these in other towns but it really does a lot to make the setting feel alive and the NPCs to feel more real.” The best games, like The Witcher 3, all take great care to improve the immersion in the world by catering AI around realistic behaviors, and this game does it perfectly.

Schrodinger’s Witcher

Another fun Easter egg, the game has a long and somewhat drawn-out reference hidden in one of the many great missions in The Witcher 3. Whereas most people might expect a fantasy game to be referencing TV shows or other games, this one instead chooses to make a joke out of a quantum mechanics thought experiment.

“Did the quest recently where you meet that Cat School Witcher in Velen,” says Reddit user dabear51. “There’s a note about the whereabouts of other Cat Witchers, including one named ‘Schrodinger’ and says something like ‘I can’t really remember Schrodinger, to be honest.'” While it doesn’t add much to the game, it is a fun little touch that most fans will never notice.

Lead a Horse to Water

Geralt of Rivia and Roach in The Witcher 3

Roach isn’t the sort of mount that a player can leave behind and expect to find waiting for them. Instead, Geralt’s trusty steed tends to explore on her own whenever the player gives her a chance. “Roach will automatically go find water or food around villages when you leave her alone,” Reddit user springpojke noticed.

While it likely isn’t a reference to the classic quote about horses and water, it is a fun element that helps make the video game world feel more lived-in. Plus, it’s also nice to see that, while Roach does wander off on her own, she’ll never really get lost.

Watch the Rabbits

A Monty Python Easter Egg in Witcher 3

Get ready to run away, because the scariest creature in The Witcher 3 also doubles as the scariest monster from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Indeed, the game took the risk of including the murderous blood-thirsty rabbit that utterly horrified King Arthur and his men.

One Reddit user, SinfullySinless described it as their favorite Easter egg, because “It was the first one I ever found and immediately recognized the mini scene.” It’s genuinely well done, as fans will easily notice the reference, while those who may not be fans of Monty Python won’t have their immersion broken by it either.

A Few Hidden Mechanics

Of course, there are countless Easter eggs, secret mechanics, and difficult-to-discover quests strewn throughout the game. It’s part of what makes it so endlessly enjoyable. “Seeing people still discover that you can use crossbows underwater, fast travel from boats, use the elevator at Kaer Trolde, etc., never gets old,” says Reddit user trashmunki.

Each of these hidden elements helps to ensure that players can always find something new each time they return to the game. It’s why it’s so replayable, and why fans continue to flock to the series almost a decade after the third iteration was released.
